Anthropic Just Out-Earned OpenAI

The AI race has a new leader — and it is not the company that started it.
For years, the narrative was simple: OpenAI moved fast, broke things, and captured the world's imagination with ChatGPT. Anthropic was the cautious cousin, the safety-first lab that would always be a step behind because it worried too much about the consequences of its technology.
That narrative just collapsed.
Anthropic posted $11.6 billion in revenue for the quarter ending June 2026, surpassing OpenAI's $6.7 billion for the first time. Even more striking: Anthropic recorded a small operating profit while OpenAI's losses deepened. The safety-first company did not just catch up. It pulled ahead.
The numbers that changed the narrative
OpenAI told investors it grew 18% from the first to the second quarter of 2026, reaching $6.7 billion in revenue. Its operating margin slipped further into the red, keeping the company unprofitable ahead of an expected IPO, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Anthropic, by contrast, doubled its revenue over the same stretch to $11.6 billion and posted a small operating profit. On an annualized basis, Anthropic's revenue run-rate has surged past $65 billion, multiple news outlets reported.
OpenAI says growth picked back up after GPT-5.6 launched in July, but the second-quarter figures disappointed some shareholders.
Claude Code: The Spearhead

The primary driver of Anthropic's revenue surge is Claude Code, its AI-powered coding assistant. While ChatGPT's consumer growth has plateaued, enterprise adoption of Claude Code has exploded. Developers and engineering teams are paying for the tool at a scale that has transformed Anthropic's financial profile.
Anthropic also earns a higher per-user revenue from its Claude models compared to OpenAI's consumer-focused ChatGPT subscriptions, according to data from Vercel.
The broader enterprise shift is unmistakable. Anthropic overtook OpenAI in business AI adoption for the first time in May 2026, according to Ramp spending data, and the gap has only widened since. Claude's reputation for reliability, safety, and stronger privacy protections has made it the preferred choice for enterprises that cannot afford AI hallucinations or data leakage.
The IPO race takes a new shape
Both companies are racing toward public markets, but the diverging financial trajectories could produce very different outcomes.
Anthropic confidentially filed its S-1 in June 2026 and is reportedly targeting an IPO as early as October. Private market valuations have reached as high as $1.2 trillion, with some investors betting the company could surpass even SpaceX's record-breaking debut.
OpenAI's path is more complicated. A larger revenue base has historically justified its higher valuation, but slower growth combined with widening losses makes the IPO calculus harder. The company's much-discussed "compute annual pass" and enterprise privacy protections are attempts to lock in longer-term revenue before going public.
What this means
The inversion of the AI revenue hierarchy carries a lesson that extends beyond the two companies. Enterprise customers are not buying the fastest model. They are buying the model they trust. Anthropic's safety-first positioning — long dismissed by Silicon Valley as a competitive disadvantage — is proving to be exactly what business buyers want.
The question now is whether OpenAI can reverse the trend. GPT-5.6's July launch provided a boost, and the company is expected to announce significant customer privacy upgrades aimed at winning back enterprise clients from Anthropic. But catching up from a revenue gap that is nearly 2:1 will require more than a product update.
The hare, it turns out, was never as far ahead as everyone assumed. And the tortoise was never as slow.
