A Million People Clicked LinkedIn's 'AI Slop' Button

Over a million people have voluntarily told LinkedIn that a post in their feed looks like AI slop. Not through some passive algorithm, not through an automated filter -- a million individual clicks on a button that says, explicitly, "this seems like AI."
LinkedIn chief product officer Hari Srinivasan shared the milestone in an August 20, 2026 post on the platform. The button, which appears in every post's three-dot menu, launched on July 30 as part of a broader crackdown on AI-generated content. Users click it. LinkedIn learns. And in the weeks since, the platform says it has already cut AI slop visibility by 40 percent.
The numbers are striking, but the real story is what they reveal. LinkedIn -- the platform built around professional identity, personal branding, and carefully calibrated authenticity -- has become the most visible experiment in letting users police AI content directly.
The button nobody asked for, that a million people wanted
The "Seems like AI slop" button is simple by design. From any post's overflow menu, a user can flag it. There is no punitive automation -- no instant shadowban, no account penalty for the poster. The flag feeds LinkedIn's classifiers, helping the platform learn what users consider AI-generated and what they do not.
The response was not subtle. Over a million clicks in less than a month suggests that AI slop was not a background concern for LinkedIn users. It was the thing clogging their feeds.
That impression has data behind it. Shortly before the button launched, AI detector Pangram estimated that 41 percent of LinkedIn's longform posts were fully AI generated -- a finding 404 Media reported widely. The professional network had quietly become the platform most saturated with synthetic content, precisely because LinkedIn's algorithmic incentives reward volume, consistency, and engagement-friendly formats that LLMs produce effortlessly.
Beyond the button: classifiers, feedback, and feature cuts
The button is the most visible piece of a larger response. Alongside it, LinkedIn introduced improved AI classifiers that identify synthetic content at scale. The company also removed an "enhance your post with AI" feature -- the kind of first-party tool that, however well-intentioned, would have added to the very problem it was trying to solve.
The results, according to Srinivasan, are measurable: "Users are now experiencing 40 percent less views on what we classify as AI slop from just a few weeks ago."
LinkedIn also added a feedback message for users who create flagged posts: "Some members told us this post seems like AI." The message assumes good intent, Srinivasan said. "I know I'm increasingly conscious on how to not sound like AI, and the goal is to provide helpful feedback."
Earlier this year, LinkedIn also said it would crack down on comments created at scale "with little or no human involvement" -- a distinct but related problem where bot networks and AI-generated comments flood professional discussions.
Why LinkedIn's problem is everyone's problem
LinkedIn's AI slop crisis is not unique to LinkedIn. Every major platform is wrestling with synthetic content. But the professional network sits at a particularly uncomfortable intersection.
On LinkedIn, posts are not just content. They are credentials. A longform post that gets thousands of impressions signals expertise, builds a personal brand, and can lead to speaking invitations, consulting gigs, or job offers. When a significant fraction of that content is generated by a language model with no actual experience, the signal-to-noise ratio that makes LinkedIn valuable to begin with starts collapsing.
The AI slop button is a pragmatic response, but it is also an admission: the platform cannot reliably distinguish human-written expertise from synthetic output on its own. It needs its users to tell it.
What a million clicks actually means
One million clicks on a content moderation button is an unusual metric. Most platforms track engagement, not flagging. But the number matters because it changes the shape of the problem.
Forty-one percent of longform posts were estimated to be AI generated. Over a million users have demonstrated they care enough to act. And the platform says visibility of flagged content has dropped 40 percent in a matter of weeks.
The open question is whether feedback loops and user-flagging can keep pace with the volume. AI-generated content is cheap to produce and getting cheaper. The cost of writing a plausible LinkedIn post with an LLM is effectively zero. The cost of generating a thousand of them is not much higher.
No button fixes that math by itself. But a million people pressing it sends a signal that LinkedIn -- and every other platform watching this experiment -- would be unwise to ignore.
